Earl Carroll Theatre, (2/05/1929 - 5/11/1929)
Category: Musical, Romantic Comedy, Operetta, Original, Broadway
Description: A musical in two acts
Setting: In and around Venice, 18th Century
Comments: Earl Carroll's first attempt at a "book" musical. At the time, the most expensive flop in history, costing his backer, Mrs. Anne Weightman Penfield $350,000. Carroll cast his girlfriend, Dorothy Knapp, as the star even though she couldn't sing. Knapp did not sing at all and was panned by the critics.
