Sage Cowles, born Jane Sage Fuller, trained as a dancer, and performed on Broadway and television during the 1950s. She married former Minneapolis Star Tribune publisher John Cowles Jr. in 1952. Together, the two helped shape the Twin Cities arts community through their philanthropic work.
Cowles remained active in dance throughout her life through performing, teaching and choreographing. She sat on the board of several area dance companies, served on the dance panel for the National Endowment for the Arts and helped form the Minnesota Independent Choreographers' Alliance.
Her philanthropy also helped establish the Barbara Baker Center for Dance at the University of Minnesota and the Cowles Land Grant Chair at the U, which brings in several renowned dance professionals each year to teach students and choreograph new work.
The Sage Awards, an annual celebration of Minnesota choreographers, dancers and educators, bears Cowles' name.
