Rupert Murray was born in the U.K., went to Trinity College, Dublin, and lived in Dublin ever since. He was a lighting designer, theatre producer and was involved with the rejuvenation of the St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Ireland in the 1990s.

He began his design career in the Project Arts Center, Dublin, where he lit more than 40 productions, then branched out to other theatres in Ireland and around the world.

As a producer, he coordinated the 1991 Beckett Festival in Dublin, seen in New York at the Lincoln Center in 1996, and a series of independent theater productions between '92 and '96.

From 1996 to 2000, he was festival director of the St. Patrick's Festival in Dublin. In 2003, he was creative director of the Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics World Summer Games, held in Dublin.

He was also executive producer for "DruidSynge" which played at the Lincoln Center Festival in July, 2006.
