Helen Montagu

( b. Apr 21, 1928 Sydney, AUSTRALIA - d. Jan 01, 2004 London, ENGLAND ) Female

Helen Montagu elegantly confounded the traditional notion that theatre producers are a tribe of philistine, scrooge-like males with an eye cocked to the main, commercial chance and the girl or boy on the casting couch.

In a producing career that spanned more than two decades, Helen Montagu - the first woman to become a major West End producer - presented a remarkably diverse range of plays and musicals in both London and Australia. Among them, Lindsay Anderson's 1975 production of Chekov's The Seagull, with Joan Plowright, The Bed Before Yesterday (1975), Cell Block H 20, The Elocution Of Benjamin Franklin (1978), 42nd Street (1984-88 in London, followed by an Australian tour), Gigi, (1985), Driving Miss Daisy (1988), The Who's Tommy, (1993), and Hot Shoe Shuffle (1994).

In 1980 Montagu produced the Broadway revival of Franco Zeffirelli's production of Filumena.
