Comments
As a director Mr. Langham was especially deft in working on a thrust, or an open, stage, the configuration at Stratford's main theater, and he oversaw a redesign of the festival stage in 1962. Though not a scholar per se, he was deeply informed in theatrical literature, and among actors he was known as a brilliant text analyst and a stern taskmaster. In 1960 the critic Brooks Atkinson, writing in The New York Times, declared Mr. Langham's troupe at Stratford "the finest group of classical actors in North America." He worked often with Brian Bedford, including on a 1991 production of Timon of Athens, which eventually landed on Broadway, and a 1995 evening of Molière comedies. Each production received three Tony nominations. His other Broadway credits include Waiting in the Wings, The Flowering Peach, and Saint Joan.
