ABOUT THIS THEATRE
New Opera House
Description
Built in 1883, the Metropolitan Opera stole the audience of the once-popular Academy of Music. In 1892, the Met burned down and was rebuilt (J.B. McElfatrick & Son, architects). It achieved great success as New York's first permanent opera company, benefitting from the theatre district that developed around it in the 1890s. It was torn down in 1966, when a new house was built for the company in Lincoln Center.
