Harkness Theatre

1887 Broadway at 62nd St., New York, NY
Seats (approximate): 1265

George Keister, architect. Built by Fred Thompson and Elmer Dundy (creators of the Hippodrome) to offer popular entertainment to the new residents of upper Broadway. After only two months, they sold it to Percy Williams, and vaudeville was the policy for the next twenty years, even with new managers (including B.F. Keith and, later, E.F. Albee). From the early 1930s to 1971, it was used for movies and, later, TV (NBC and ABC). After a brief, unsuccessful return to legit use, it was razed in 1977.

Built: 1905    Demolished: 1977
