New Amsterdam Theatre

214 W. 42nd St., New York, NY
Seats (approximate): 1801

Herts & Tallant, architects. Built by Klaw & Erlanger. With its elaborate architecture and decor, it brought Art Nouveau to Broadway. Beginning in 1913, Ziegfeld brought his "Follies" to the New Amsterdam. In 1937, with the heyday of the revue in the past, it became a movie palace. In 1982, it earned landmark status and was purchased by the Nederlanders who sold it to the state in 1992. Disney performed extensive renovations before reopening the theatre in 1997.

To learn more about the history and restoration of the New Amsterdam Theatre, see Spotlight on Broadway's video on the New Amsterdam Theatre.
