Hughes was nominated for a Tony Award in 1961 for her work as a supporting actress in The Devil's Advocate.
The actress made her Broadway debut in 1959's The Miracle Worker, understudying the role of Annie Sullivan. Following her Tony Award nomination the next season, she went on to have steady success in Broadway plays for the next two decades.
