John Castello

Born and raised in Sacramento, as were his parents, Walter O. and Blanche Elliott Castello, John attended local schools. He served as student body president of both his junior high and high school in Sacramento.

John attended the University of California at Berkeley, from which he graduated in 1946 with a degree in Liberal Arts.

He moved to New York City where he appeared in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions, most notably in the original production of Kiss Me, Kate that opened December 30, 1948. John appeared in modern dance concerts and in many summer stock companies on the East and West coasts. His other appearances were in film and dance companies in Hollywood, in Las Vegas, and in San Francisco.

John C. was recognized by the California State Legislature, the U.S. Congress, and President Clinton for his work in human rights and community health and welfare. In 1993, he was nominated for the President's Volunteer Action Award. John was a founding member of the Monterey County AIDS Project, where he served as a volunteer and several client's companion for more than ten years. He also founded the Sleeper-Thayer Foundation, which assists young artists. Over the years, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Carmel Bach Festival and the Cypress Swim Club.

John had a passion for travel and for the fine arts. He visited over 40 different countries, and visited New York and London frequently to keep abreast of the theatre. When he was home, he enjoyed creating abstract paintings, some of which were exhibited locally.
